Ian R. McIlroy brings extensive experience to a diverse practice focused on estate planning and administration, trusts, elder and long-term-care planning, municipal matters, and civil and commercial law.

A significant portion of Ian's practice is devoted to helping individuals and families plan for the future and navigate the legal and financial issues that arise with aging, incapacity, and death. His estate planning practice extends beyond traditional wills and powers of attorney to more complex estate and trust planning. He also assists clients with estate and trust administration and with planning involving Medicaid and Medicare issues and long-term-care needs.

Ian's broad civil background also includes municipal and local-government matters. His experience includes work involving the City of Hagerstown and municipal code-enforcement matters, as well as civil litigation, appeals, business, commercial, and contract law.

Over the course of his career, Ian has represented a remarkably diverse range of clients—from large multinational banking institutions to elderly individuals living on fixed incomes. That breadth of experience allows him to evaluate legal problems from multiple perspectives and tailor his representation to the circumstances and objectives of the individual, family, business, or organization he represents.

Ian also has substantial experience in family law, including divorce, alimony, marital property distribution, child custody, child support, agreements, and post-divorce matters. His experience with financial, property, estate, and business issues can be particularly valuable when those issues intersect with domestic matters.

Ian has longstanding ties to the local legal community. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Bar Association for Washington County, Maryland since 2014 and has served as the Association's Treasurer.

Born in Baltimore and raised in nearby Charles Town, West Virginia, Ian graduated summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Politics. He earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2008, where he was a Chancellor's Law Scholar and served as a student representative on the Honor Council.

When he is not practicing law, Ian enjoys watching football and soccer, competing in local trivia competitions, and, most of all, spending time with his son.
